Day 14. Bedford, PA

Can't believe it's day 14 already but it is. Today we left out of, well, wherever we were last night. Oh yeah, KOA north of Columbus.

When we got up this morning, I realized it was 9/11 and our route would take us in the vicinity of the place where flight 93 crashed. So we plugged the Flight 93 Memorial into the navigator and headed there.

We arrived late in the afternoon, so I can't say whether or not there was a particular ceremony earlier in the day but I imagine there was. In any case it was a pretty somber and awe-inspiring memorial.

This granite path is aligned with the flight path of flight 93 in it's final seconds.

From the observation deck at the end of this path you can see the field and impact zone. In the far distance the area where you can see the green mown lawn...that's the impact zone. It's actually about a mile from the observation deck.

And this is the "Tower of Voices" which has a wind chime for each of the 40 passengers lost.

As for the rest of the day, it went like  this-
Ok, for starters, who knew you pass through West Virginia between Ohio and Pennsylvania?  No. I mean it. Who knew?

I'm  sure these pics are out of order...but you get it. Pennsylvania, Monongahela river... all that. Loved the Allegheny mountains.  We took Highway 30 from the crash site to Friendship Village and it was spectacular.  Cute country towns...and old historic buildings everywhere!

  1. Glad you guys got to stop at the memorial. As I mentioned, Todd Beamer ("Let's roll") was from Cranbury, NJ where we visit Sheryl's mom. We usually drive by his house every time were there and his grave is in the cemetery alongside the nursing home we go to. I saw that he played baseball at Fresno State before going to Wheaton. That was probably around 1990.
