Day 9. Chamberlain SD.

We are loving South Dakota. I need to check the almanac. I think it snows here. A lot. Otherwise we could move here right now! The people are awesome.  There is a "git 'er done" attitude. Everyone is looking for ways to make other people's lives better. It just seems like everyone is positive. Even the local news. Every story was positive. NO negativity. I love it!

Pretty uneventful driving day other than when we stopped for gas, right behind the gas station was this building with a sign which said "free whiskey". Well that ain't fair. I'm driving. But I had to go in. I met the distiller, who  grows his own corn, buys honey from a local bee man, and distills his whiskey in small batches. One barrel at a time. So I grabbed a bottle of his bourbon. 2nd batch, 45th bottle. It's not bad.

We're camped on the Missouri River in eastern SD. Beautiful spot. We were sitting outside at sunset and there was a deer about 50ft away eating pears that fell off a tree. Its dark now but we'll try to load some pics tomorrow.

Just grilled some pork chops and pineapple for dinner.

We are literally sitting here trying to decide where to go tomorrow...stay on 90 and go through Minnesota,  or head south to Sioux City, IA. For me the whole thing is about staying as far away from Chicago as possible!  I think we decided on Sioux city.

  1. Hey Tom, if you're going through Sioux City will you be heading by Des Moines, where the Thunderbolt Kid grew up? I forget if you read that book "The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir" by Bill Bryson about growing up in our era in Des Moines - so funny. Bill Bryson also wrote A Walk In The Woods about his hilarious adventures on the Appalachian Trail which you may have read.

The Missouri's looking good - so are the chops.

    1. Wow! I still haven’t read those books, though they have been recommended! We will be going through Des Moines the day after tomorrow!

  2. Tom, now that you're retired you can catch up on your reading. They are both great reads. "Free" whiskey?!! And convenient at the gas station. Lucky you.
